John Tenniel's "Alice Meets Tweedledum and Tweedledee"

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland follows a young girl down a mysterious rabbit hole. She finds herself in a strange land where she grows and shrinks at random, meets peculiar and maddening creatures, and narrowly escapes her own beheading when her sister wakes her up for tea.

Although Alice Liddell inspired the story's heroine, Tenniel's illustrations depict an entirely different girl. Tenniel's Alice had cascading blond locks instead of Liddell's dark bob with bangs. He originally envisioned her in a dark headband and striped stockings, although these details disappeared before the book was widely printed.

Subsequent editions retained the iconic Alice ensemble: a puff-sleeved frock falling just below the knee, topped by a ruffled white pinafore. Alice's striped stockings were replaced by a plain white pair, but her black Mary Janes remained intact.
